Emmanuel leads research at the intersection of design, health, wellbeing and technology. His design-led research in the areas of health, ageing, wellbeing and defence has generated public interest and attracted media attention by the national press, such as the Daily MailDaily MirrorThe Times, the Daily MailDiscovery News and several other international online media outlets.

Emmanuel applies design innovation in the area of healthcare and researches health promoting innovations by 'designing out' the problems and barriers that prevent health-promoting behaviours.  He conducts research in the design of technology-inspired health interventions and services, which are created by end-users and are aimed at improving the quality of life and wellbeing of people into old age, including people with chronic health problems (i.e. Dementia, Parkinson’s, Stroke). Emmanuel researches preventative tools that encourage healthier behaviours through the use of playfulness and interactive playful objects. His current research looks at how design can help prevent the transmission of bacterial and viral infections in indoour environments.

Lastly, Emmanuel is a member of the Centre for Ageing Research, the Data Science Institute and the Programme leader for the new BA Design, co-editor of the Routledge Design for Health book published in 2017 and blogs regularly for The Guardian and The Conversation on the design and use of technology in Health.

Learning from zoos – how our environment can influence our health

The title of my latest article published at The Conversation, covers the subject of design for health. It argues that the way we design the environment we live in, ultimately designs our behaviour. Therefore before we start fat shaming, let’s take a look at urban design. If we want to be a nation of lean, mean and healthy citizens we need to learn from zoos and the animals that live in them. ...Read full article

It’s not too late to turn the NHS apps library disaster into an opportunity

The NHS has been keen to use the proliferation of smartphones as a way to encourage people to maintain their health through smartphone apps. Or rather it did, until it was closed after some recent negative publicity, including some studies that cast doubt on whether many of the apps had any beneficial effects at all and others that revealed that the apps were leaking sensitive personal data to all and sundry. ...Read full article

Wearable health tech is still in its early days. These devices come with sensors that can record how many steps and how much exercise you’ve taken, how well and long you‘ve slept, stress levels, blood pressure, sun exposure, even what you’ve have eaten. Added together, all this could easily demonstrate that you’re not so sick after all. ...Read full article
