Emmanuel leads research at the intersection of design, health, wellbeing and technology. His design-led research in the areas of health, ageing, wellbeing and defence has generated public interest and attracted media attention by the national press, such as the Daily MailDaily MirrorThe Times, the Daily MailDiscovery News and several other international online media outlets.  

Emmanuel applies design innovation in the area of healthcare andresearches health promoting innovations by 'designing out' the problems and barriers that prevent health-promoting behaviours.  He conducts research in the design of technology-inspired health interventions and services, which are created by end-users and are aimed at improving the quality of life and wellbeing of people into old age, including people with chronic health problems (i.e. Dementia, Parkinson’s, Stroke). Emmanuel researches preventative tools that encourage healthier behaviours through the use of playfulness and interactive playful objects. His current resaerch looks at how design can help prevent the transmission of bacterial and viral infections in indoour environments. 

Lastly, Emmanuel is a member of the Centre for Ageing Research, the Data Science Institute and the Programme leader for the new BA Design, co-editor of the Taylor Francis Design for Health book published in 2017 and blogs regularly for The Guardian and The Conversation on the design and use of technology in Health.
