The research project, ‘A design management approach for supporting the delivery of CSR with special reference to the electronics industry’, focuses on design management activities; CSR strategies, process and tactics with relevant to design; and, in particular, on new product development (NPD) processes in multinational electronics companies. The aim of this study is to understand a design management approach that can contribute to the delivery of CSR, notably in new product development processes, with special reference to the electronics industry.
This study explores the perspectives of designers in terms of their perception of the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and design. A series of in-depth interviews with practising designers and design managers were the primary method of data gathering. Based on the findings, as well as conducting a literature review, this research classifies conscious and unconscious design decision making in terms of the social and environmental issues, within a range of regulated to non-regulated issues by the company. The study will concludes by providing a design management framework to evaluate where CSR decisions are being made, and how conscious and unconscious socially-responsible design decisions affect CSR performance particularly in the new product development process. Finally, recommendations will be made for: (i) the development of CSR management approaches at a corporate level, (ii) design management processes which enable the realistic implementation of the CSR principles in NPD process at an operational level, and (iii) alternative structural design management frameworks for the development and successful implementation of the CSR principles through design.
