Martyn is Senior Lecturer in Design at Lancaster University. His research interests explore the approaches designers use to consider the future, in particular the ability of designers to envision potential social, cultural, technological and economic futures. As a trained product designer, his research activities centre on design futures, trends, and forecasting, and he has presented widely upon this area.
Martyn is currently co-investigator upon 'Design 2020', an AHRC funded project looking at potential futures for the UK design industry, and has secured and supervised a number of government-funded knowledge transfer initiatives within the area of design and new product development. With extensive experience of leading undergraduate and postgraduate design curricula, he is currently Course Director for MA Design: Management and Policy. Martyn is external examiner at a number of UK institutions and have acted as an academic advisor for curriculum development both nationally and internationally.
Design 2020: The UK design industry in 2020
Design 2020 is a research project undertaken by the Universities of Salford and Lancaster in partnership with British Design Innovation. The overall aim of Design 2020 is to explore potential futures for the UK Design industry.
National Design Policy
An Evaluative Framework for National Design Policy Initiatives. The overall aim of the project is to understand national design policy initiatives and the impact on design, related industries and the economy.
Vernacular Invention
Context specific knowledge has a great deal to offer design. The challenge is to identify and translate this knowledge into a form that designers can utilise within the design and development process. This project will result in a pan-European visual archive of innovation developed and applied outside the realm of professional design to improve the design process.
