Integration of Scales : Mass-produced plus Locally Produced Parts

Date Published: 01 May 2009

The chapter discusses how the principles of sustainability,k when applied the creation, production and use of our human-made material culture, invokes a systemic shift away from the homogeneous, globalized methods developed over the course of the 20th century – which have proved socially and environmentally destructive – and towards a more integrated conception of ‘progress’ that honours place, culture, people and planet. New ways forward are required that integrate the best of mass-production with the best of local scale production to produce new kinds of objects that not only provide functional benefits but also express deeper, more enduring and more responsible values.
