Study with Us

PhD Programs

We have a large highly successfull doctoral programme at Imagination with over fifty PhD students. We offer a very broad context in which to study Design both in terms of theory and practice. We consider students as integral members of Imagination and aim to ensure you have the best possible experience while studying.

As design research, is an everchanging landscape, members of Imagination are constantly evolving their research focus. To respond to these changes we adopt research themes where we come together ashared research interests. Please check out our current research themes which will highlight Imagination researchers working in those areas who you may want to contact in regards a PhD.

How to Apply

To process your application, you will need to complete a proposal form that outlines your research title, questions, aims, objectives, and methods. This information is used to match you with suitable supervisors in our department (if you havent already identified someone). Please note that according to Lancaster University rules, you are required to have two supervisors.

There are a number of steps to the application process.

  1. Ensure you met our eligibility criteria before you apply.
  2. Once a proposal is drafted, we will conduct an informal interview or request additional edits to your proposal at this stage.
  3. The Director of Studies will have oversight and a copy of the proposal and oversee supervisory arrangements.
  4. Once these steps are complete, a formal application can be made via the University system.

Scholarships

If you are interested in scholarships or bursaries, please check current availability for further details. Please note that all applicants are responsible for securing their own funding and can apply for any applicable scholarships. Note: The competition for scholarships is extremely high, and research proposal quality is the main factor in the assessment process.

Masters and Undergraduate Taught Programmes

Our Masters and Undergraduate programmes offer a range of options for studying design with us and are not only about learning theories and concepts, but encourage creative practice, sharing and showing our student’s work, and being part of a dynamic cohort not only within design but also LICA and the wider university.
