On the 16th of February 2026, the inaugural session of the Empower & Transform through Placemaking series of workshops kicked off at Full of Noises (FoN) in Barrow, setting the stage for a journey of spatial and creative expression. This workshop aimed foster a shared sense of spatial understanding creativity among young local participants, facilitated by renown local artist Lizzie Clough.
The session began with an engaging icebreaker, designed to draw out participants’ perceptions of space establish a collaborative atmosphere right from the start. This activity not only broke the ice but also laid the foundation for meaningful dialogue throughout the day.

Participants then embarked on a guided orientation walk around Barrow Park, focusing on the monument area. This exercise in spatial awareness and way-finding encouraged participants to connect more deeply with their surroundings, enhancing their to navigate and interpret space. It was an eye-opening experience that set the stage for the day’s main activity: a collaborative map.
In this creative endeavour, participants co-created a detailed map featuring Barrow, Lancaster, and Morecambe. Using 3D cardboard models, they local landmarks and everyday aspects of life unique to them. The collaborative map-making process empowered the young participants to express their unique perspectives and actively engage with their local environment. By working together, they discovered potential for their voices to influence and inform the spaces they inhabit.
The workshop successfully laid the groundwork for future sessions, providing a dynamic participatory environment where creativity and dialogue thrive. This initial session not only fostered a sense of agency and community among participants but also demonstrated the power of placemaking in transforming spaces into vibrant, inclusive environments. This foundational workshop will serve as an inspiration for ongoing exploration and creative empowerment among the youth of Barrow.
