On the 4th of March 2026, a vibrant atmosphere at the University of Cumbria’s Sentamu Building set the stage for an invigorating climate action exploration at the Lancashire Community Climate Action Forum (LancsCAN). Among the many enlightening sessions, we run a PYA WALKshop in close collaboration with Lancaster City Council team, and Dr Ezgi Bay Sahin. The workshop was not only about understanding placemaking as a concept but actively exploring its potential as a tool for climate adaptation, mitigation, building long-term resilience in our communities.

The heart of workshop was a “WALKshop,” an and interactive walking session around the University of Cumbria campus. Armed with Lancaster’s innovative Placemaking Framework, participants embarked on a journey into the nuances of climate-conscious urban design. The framework offered a yet flexible approach enabling attendees to critically evaluate how urban spaces are fashioned and how they resonate with of and inclusivity.

One of the standout insights from the session was the participants’ acknowledgment of the framework as an effective catalyst to spar dialogue on feasible actions that can be integrated within the Cumbria campus. Many remarked on how the simple act of walking through these spaces, combined with the reflective nature of the framework, heightened their awareness. It highlighted the intricacies of space design and its profound on how urban design can facilitate or hamper sustainable living.
