The Social Design Special Interest Group (SIG) is dedicated to exploring the transformative power of design in fostering social good. Recognising that design has the potential to shape society and create meaningful change, this group investigates how design practices, such as co-design, participatory design, and speculative design, can contribute to building more inclusive and equitable communities. Our research focuses on maximising the social impact of social, technological and environmental transitions, ensuring that these shifts benefit society as a whole. Through a variety of activities, including writing workshops, reading groups, and symposiums, as well as outward-facing engagements like conference workshops and collaborations with local partners, the Social Design SIG seeks to bridge the gap between design theory and real-world application, driving positive social change.
